05-12 NURSE DAY. ‘So, why do you want to be a nurse?’

‘So, why do you want to be a nurse?’

12-5-2021

Possibly the most dreaded question to be asked at your university interview … how do you answer?

For me there was no moment of divine intervention, no following the footsteps of an admired parent or relative but rather a gradual realisation that nursing would be the perfect career for me.

I have been lucky enough to have had the pleasure of meeting some healthcare professionals who have inspired me and I hope to one day equal their skill, diligence and passion.

I think my main source of inspiration to become a nurse comes from an innate desire to help people and care for them in times of need. I am also a person who thrives on being challenged and I always have new goals to achieve, so nursing suits me as few other careers offer as much diversity and learning opportunities.

During my experience volunteering at a local hospice I realised that palliative care is a wonderful area to work in, definitely not sad and depressing as many seem to think!

I have many lovely memories of people I have met and worked with at the hospice. Having this experience and insight into nursing care definitely helped me get through the nerve-wracking experience of applying to university. It’s great to have lots of things to talk about at an interview and my work experience certainly gave me plenty to share and I was able to demonstrate my true passion for the profession.

“It’s great to have lots of things to talk about at an interview”

I would encourage anybody interested in nursing to get some work experience, it’s a brilliant way to find out if nursing would suit you and can be extremely rewarding and it is looked on very favourably by admissions tutors as well as being a lot of fun,  highly insightful and a great learning opportunity.

It was also very rewarding to feel that my input, no matter how small, had an effect on the lives of those I was caring for.

I am due to start my degree in adult nursing this September and I really cannot wait! I am full of beans and bursting with enthusiasm. After a year out from study I am raring to go and get stuck into the beginning of a career I know I will love.

Ashley Needham starts her degree in adult nursing this September.

TOPIC 4: How to save someone who is drowning in water

ONE METHOD

If you notice someone rocking vertically in the water and cannot call for help, you must act quickly to determine if the person is drowning and rescue them immediately. A person can drown in a matter of minutes. If you can't find a lifeguard nearby, you have to do the rescue yourself. If you are prepared, you will make a big difference in someone else's life.

1.

Determine if the person is indeed drowning . The victim is conscious but is unable to call for help because he is in distress. Also, the water is probably ruffling her. It is very important that you recognize these signs as soon as possible, since it only takes 20 to 60 seconds for the person to submerge completely and not be able to rise to the surface. [1]

The victim will move up and down in the water with their mouth just above the surface. Also, the person will be unable to move towards shore. [two]

If someone seems to be in trouble and doesn't ask for help, they probably don't have enough oxygen to scream.

2.

Scream for help. No matter what experience or preparation you have, it is always good to look to other people to help you. Scream that someone is drowning to alert others. Contact emergency numbers immediately, especially if the person is floating face down. [3]

3.

Determine the rescue method you are going to use. Stay calm and find out the best way to rescue the person based on their location and the type of body of water they are in. If possible, find a flotation device. If the person is close to you, use a reach method. If the person is too far away, use an ocean rescue method. [4]

It may take a few seconds to get the person's attention. Stay calm and continue talking to her.

If you have a shepherd's crook, you can use it to reach someone out of reach in a pool or lake.

Use a float or other easy-to-cast rescue device to reach the victim if they are far from shore. This device also serves for an ocean rescue.

As a last resort, you should dive in and swim towards the victim if they are out of your reach.

4. Proceed with the rescue. Stay calm and focus . People who panic are more likely to make mistakes. In addition, they can make the victim tense. Let the victim know that you are coming to their aid.

TOPIC 3: Types of knots

The knots are very important techniques to do, below we are going to bring you closer types of knots

We went through a very well known source, "wikipedia" looking for really good types of knots.

This list of knots includes many alternative names for common knots and lashings. Knot names have evolved over time and there are many conflicting or confusing naming issues. The overhand knot, for example, is also known as the thumb knot. The figure-eight knot is also known as the savoy knot or the Flemish knot.

  • Adjustable bend – can be easily lengthened or shortened
  • Adjustable grip hitch – a simple hitch which may easily be shifted up and down the rope while slack
  • Albright special – used to tie two different diameters of line together, for instance to tie monofilament to braid
  • Alpine Butterfly (also known as Butterfly Loop) - a static loop mostly used by mountain climbers and rappellers for securing a carabiner to static rope.
  • Alternate ring hitching – covering a ring in hitching can prevent damage
  • Anchor bend – attaching a rope to a ring or similar termination
  • Angler's loop – knot which forms a fixed loop. Useful for fine or slippery line, it is one of the few loop knots which holds well in bungee cord.
  • Arbor knot – attach fishing line to the arbor of a fishing reel
  • Artillery loop a.k.a. manharness knot – a knot with a loop on the bight for non-critical purposes
  • Ashley's bend – used to securely join the ends of two ropes together
  • Ashley's stopper knot – trefoil-faced stopper at the end of the rope
  • Axle hitch – used to tie a hitch in a hard-to-reach place

Britannica inform:
The overhand knot is the simplest type of knot and is used to make a knob in a rope, string, or cord. It is used for tying packages, to keep rope ends from fraying, and as a first step in making more complex knots such as the surgeon’s knot and the square knot. An overhand knot is made by crossing the rope end around the standing part to form a loop, bringing the rope’s end through the loop, and pulling the rope taut. A slipknot results when, in tying an overhand knot, a loop instead of the rope’s end is slipped through the first loop.

Such a knot is easily slipped loose by pulling on its free end. Shoelaces are usually tied with a double slipknot. A square knot is composed of two overhand knots turned in opposite ways. It flattens when pulled tight, making it useful in first aid and for tying packages. A surgeon’s knot is an elaborated form of the square knot; it is composed of two overhand knots turned in opposite ways but with an additional twist taken after the first overhand is tied. This allows the parts of the rope to be held in place by friction until the second overhand is tied. The knot derived its name from its surgical use in tying a ligature around a cut artery.

NEW PROYECT

This project has started with a conversation on Discord about the priorities that are needed in today's world, joining forces for a common goal during 2020 has created a very strong awareness regarding their respective places in the Realm of the development team. Storm. Realm of the Storm is International in nature but many people who help or work with Realm of the Storm also come from developing countries or countries with difficulties of all kinds.

Precedents

There are precedents that video games want to collaborate on humanitarian reasons, the creator of Fornite has invested millions of dollars in saving forests in North Carolina with the aim of protecting and preserving forest lands. Hellblade donates thousands of dollars to the charitable society Rethink Mental Illness to support people with mental illness. Realm of the Storm does not want to be left behind in its contribution to humanity.

The reflection for Realm of the Storm is to be able to contribute more than a single game, the development team now wants to also strive to contribute something that everyone needs. We would like to continue growing to become an NGO or collaborative association.

The world is not a video game, the world needs solutions to problems, not only due to the pandemic but many structural problems that have been occurring for a long time.

Our goal is to draw the attention of the United Nations or other humanitarian or cooperation organizations such as (Alboan.org, World Vision, Acumen, Oxfam International, Alianza por la solidariedad, Actionaid, PIH and DRC, among others.

Objectives

The objective of a possible future Realm of the Storm –NGO is to carry out potential collaborative projects or different types of organizations of a similar nature, in addition to offering our humanitarian side or our entire community of the Realm of the Storm- video game.
